Olivier Messiaen: Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus

A legendary work for the 100th Anniversary year of a legendary composer

Program:

fEARnoMUSIC founder Jeffrey Payne presents a complete performance of Olivier Messiaen's legendary work Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus (Twenty Gazes/Contemplations on the Infant Jesus), one of the grandest conceptions in the piano literature, and the summit of Messiaen's keyboard writing. These contemplations are at once tender and almost brutal, finally triumphant in the powerful apotheosis of the cyclical themes. Composed in 1944 in Paris for Yvonne Loriod, during terribly troubled times, the piece initially received a mixed critical reception. Though it is now recognized as one of the most important piano works of the twentieth century, complete performances of Vingt Regards are still rare.

Greek for "a change," parallaxis gives rise to parallax, denoting the apparent change in an object viewed from different positions. Here, the positions are metaphorical: music and motion pictures as complementary angles. Curated in collaboration with Portland media studio Helsinqi, this concert pairs works by contemporary composers and film/video artists.
