Program:

Inspired by our own childhoods and travels, Squiggly Sounds and Tales from Afar is a concert for kids (and adults!) that features stories from around the world -- in a fun, slightly wacky, and visually engaging format, with special guest puppeteers, acrobats, dancers, and actors!

We are especially excited to feature local composers (including a Young Composers Project student), who have paired up with performing artists to develop pieces based on folk stories, fairy tales, and historical events:

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Twilight Zone's first season, Bob Priest presents "The After Hours" for child actress, puppets, and string trio. This free adaptation of Rod Serling's odd little tale features a department store customer's gradual realization that she is really a mannequin... Mary Wright gives us the fascinating story of the Great Wall of China, for dancer, acrobat and the whole ensemble... in A Visitor for Bear, award-winning author Bonny Becker has created a modern classic; Evan Kuhlman joins Tears of Joy Puppet Theater in this sweet story in which Bear realizes that living alone can be pretty lonely, and that opening your home to friends is both rewarding and fun ... Gregory Vajda works with the musicians to recreate "A Mad Tea-Party," in which Alice meets the Mad Hatter and the March Hare: "A very merry unbirthday to you!"... and John Paul, inspired by the colorful characters found in the Asterix comics, presents "Cacofonix the Bard," the tale of how our heroes use their Gaulish wits to vanquish their foe.
