Memoirs

Costello, Harrison, Golijov, Dutilleux

FNM Musicians: Inés Voglar + Paloma Griffin, violins; Joël Belgique, viola; Nancy Ives, cello.; Joel Bluestone, percussion; Jeff Payne, piano;
Guest singer: Timothy Nishimoto.

Program:

It has been said that all music is about love or death (or both). Strong experiences and emotions make for haunting listening as we span genres and landscapes with works by artists distinctly unafraid of new horizons.

Pink Martini¹s Timothy Nishimoto joins us for selections from Elvis Costello¹s The Juliet Letters, inspired by Shakespeare¹s ultimate death-for-love. Then we cross the globe with the music of Lou Harrison, an American original who fell in love early with music from Asian cultures, and never ceased to marry it with his own.

Two composers give us dedications to lost friends: Argentine superstar Osvaldo Golijov captures a moment frozen in memory, the ³short instant before grief² upon learning of the death of Mariel, while Henri Dutilleux seeks to suspend time and space in his string quartet Ainsi la nuit.
