Featuring: Enoch Arden‹a Melodrama for Speaker & Piano (Op. 38). Poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892); Music by Richard Strauss (1864-1949). Featured artists: Art Maddox, narrator; Victor Steinhardt, pianist.

An engrossing and poignant narrative by Queen Victoria's Poet Laureate, musically enhanced by one of the world's great romantic composers. Enoch Arden is a prime example of the 'melodrama' art form music with the spoken word. It was very popular in 19th century Europe and America, and no doubt a precursor of the later blending of music with story in cinema. Performed with intermission by pianist Victor Steinhardt and emotive reader Art Maddox. Bring your hankies!
